The Practice
The practice can trace its origins back to the turn of the last century. It has expanded over the years and now operates from two purpose-built premises at Gale Farm Surgery in Acomb and The Old Forge Surgery in Poppleton. We now serve over 13,000 patients, the majority of whom reside in and around Acomb and Poppleton. The rest are drawn from the villages to the North and West of York.
We try to offer a first class, friendly service in the tradition upheld by our predecessors, but at the same time we are prepared to seize the opportunities offered by change. An example of this was our willingness to become fundholders in 1992 and to use this as an opportunity to provide extra services, eg counselling, physiotherapy and chiropody. 1998 brought another re-organisation of Primary Care which saw the setting up of Primary Care Groups to be followed by Primary Care Trusts. Presently we are setting up structures to embrace the new National Health Contract for General Practitioners. We work to contribute to the success of these structures and to enhance the service we provide within the practice.
We recognise the value of and participate in the training of qualified doctors who intend to pursue a career in general practice. We usually have at least one GP registrar working with us and value their contribution. As part of their training, videoing of their consultations is sometimes required; this would only take place with your written permission.Currently students from the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) are receiving medical training at the practice.
